The above spreadsheet shows that the number of veterans in
Wyoming is approximately 55,371. Here's how we arrive at that
number:
-
The Census Bureau categorizes each person into one of
16 different categories: 15 different kinds of veterans (based on era
of service) and one category for non-veterans (N/A).
-
We count the number of people in each category.
-
We add up all people in the 15 veteran categories
(leaving out the N/A category).
-
The "Total Veterans In State" column has the
total.
There are a few things worth noting here:
-
Notice that after the "People" column
there are columns for "LoVal" and "HiVal".
This is an extremely valuable benefit that the Census Bureau has given
us recently - now we can determine how good the numbers are.
There is a 90% chance that the "real" number is between
"LoVal" and "HiVal". For our calculations we
use "People", but be aware that this is an
estimate. (The word "Census" actually comes from the
Latin "censeo", meaning "I estimate").
-
Note that some of the "LoVal" are
negative. Obviously, there cannot be a negative number of
people. This is an artifact of the mathematical process used to
determine the HiVal and LoVal, and it is understood that in the case
where a negative number appears, the lowest possible number would be
zero.
-
As we have been telling our clients for years (and now
we can prove it!) the larger the number is, the more reliable it
is. For example, the N/A category (the largest here) has a
high/lo range of only about 1%. The 4th category down, in
contrast, has a high/lo range of over 100%.
