The Value Of Custom Analysis

There are, for all practical purposes, an infinite number of ways to slice and dice data - especially when you start creating what-if simulations. Most data shops approach the problem by trying to store a variety of sliced and diced reports (or store the capability to create the reports on demand). Using this method, you can sometimes get close to what a customer wants with a pre-arranged report. The problem is that "close" is often not good enough. The customer ends up taking a "best guess", or doing a "back of the envelope" calculation in order to do business planning. The reason that other shops use this approach is that it is too difficult and time consuming to slice and dice the data according to the customer's need. Each new report would require a new computer program to be written.

Innovative Computing (which owns and operates SliceAndDiceData.com) has approached the problem by creating tools that allow us to slice, dice, and create what-if simulations at will, without hand-writing custom software. This is what allows us to do custom analyses quickly, which would take weeks or months for others to do. These tools have been used for years in the telephone industry, and are now being applied to US Census data.
