Indian Misclassification Problem
To put it in a nutshell, a large percentage of Asian Indians are misclassified as American Indians in the 1990 Census, according to the "Ancstry1" (primary ancestry) data item in the long form.
Note that counting people based on an ancestry of "Asian Indian" is not the same as counting Asian Indians. There is a discussion of the two different topics here.
The magnitude of the problem varies with geography. For example, in New York City, there are approximately 50,000 American Indians according to the "Ancstry1" data item. But closer examination reveals that over 25,000 of those "American Indians" are actually misclassified Asian Indians. To see how we arrived at this conclusion, and see in-depth analyses of the data, please read the following text and follow the links.
