Our Comments on the Indian Problem
- We are aware that the preferred terms are "Native American" (instead of "American Indian") and "Indian American" (instead of "Asian Indian"). But we are going to use the terms as specified in the 1990 census to minimize further confusion. Hopefully no one will be offended by that, and this situation will make it clear why "Native American" and "Indian American" are the preferable, clearer, terms.
- All large and complex datasets tend to have errors, and with commonly available tools, errors can be difficult to notice. The Census Bureau is being singled out because their data is public, not because their data has an unusually large number of errors.
- The issues that we are concerned about are these:
- Has this error already been understood and addressed? There are two reasons that we believe the error has not been previously uncovered and publicized:
- We haven't found any mention of it on the internet.
- The version of the data that we are using is a re-release, with, as we understand it, errors corrected by the Census Bureau. If the error were known, it should have been corrected.
- What are the implications of this situation? What decisions been made based on the Primary Ancestry data item over the past 10 years?
